    Design, adjustment and registration of a 3D articulated model for hand tracking in image sequences

    We first present a state of the art of gesture recognition by model registration and artificial vision, and then our current work on 3D modeling and tracking of the hand in monoscopic images sequences, without markers. A 3D generic model is adjusted to the operator's morphology in an image of his open hand. The hand silhouette is segmented using a skin hue criteria. Then, fingers are separated by morphological filtering and the model is adjusted using characteristic points and inertia moments. The model is animated, from this initial pose to reproduce movments observed in a video sequence. Joint angles and hand pose are adjusted to match the projected model contours with the contours extracted from the image. Results are presented for translation and abduction/adduction movments. Gesture modelisation by artificial vision could be a valuable help for applications such as human-machine interaction by gesture for object designation or manipulation in space, low bit rate coding of gesture ...
