Limes Culturae, czyli kilka uwag o Cooperowskiej "historii opisowej" pogranicza

    Export to Mendeley

Limes culturae, or a handful of remarks upon J.F. Cooper' s "descriptive history" of the American Frontier Considerations included in the present chapter founded upon the intellectual inventory of contemporary postcolonial studies, offer a vision of phenomena related to the Frontier as sketched by J.F. Cooper. These phenomena are presented from the perspective of the complexity of two interacting Weltanschauungs. The assumed starting point for the reflections in the text is the conception of liminality, understood in terms of range and scope of two dissimilar symbolic orders, conditioning cultural identity of their representatives and the uniqueness of the cultural "community of values". J.F. Cooper's prose appears to inscribe itself into such a discourse of the "liminality of the Frontier" perfectly well, and the most evident example of such a tendency is his novel The Pioneers (1823). The present chapter focuses upon the "crevices" and discontinuities of the auctorial narrative, stemming from the Eurocentric vision of the culture of the Other, which permeates the novel. It indicates those characteristics of the discourse of the Frontier which rendered the Indian vision of the world an impossible alternative to that developed by the Judaeo-Christian culture - and, in consequence, doomed the Indian reality to oblivion.
