Abstract : "Ekphrastic" Images
The present article is an attempt at explaining the mechanism conditioning a peculiar variety of "cultural blindness", the germ of which gnaws at societies originating in the Eurocentric tradition of thought. The hereby remarks, however, are oriented primarily towards proposing a specific version of a postcolonial theory of culture, which could, possibly, serve as a tool for further textual analyses. The central goal of lhe paper is thus to indicate a few "ophthalmologic" factors responsible for the specificity of reception of a remote cultural text, especially a sub-text of other race, (or, perhaps, of Otheness sensu largo) - factors, which seem to characterize a statistical Polish reader. The underlying assumption of the analyses is grounded in Ellison's observation that in the context of a clash of cultures - more frequently than not - we prove to be " blind," regardless of all the symptoms of somatic sanity; capable of perceiving the direct surroundings of the Other, of ourselves, and of all products of our imagination - we fail to notice the Other him- or herself. In such a context, the present chapter attempts to demonstrate that the image of the Other is a product of an "ekphrastic" visualization of Olherness .
